Either that or that allows you to run say a split army. 2000 points of Marines, and 2000 points of Imperial Guard. While an opponent could have 2000 points of Dark Eldar and 2000 points of Biel-tan Eldar. On the next table someone has 2000 points of Vraksian Renegades and 2000 points of Emperor's Children versing another player with 2000 points of Feral Orks and 2000 points of Ork Kult of Speed. The combos could be wild. (I am guessing an allies table) say Tau and guard, but not tau and deathwatch.)

I suppose I am reminiscing of the old days when I had 15,000 points a side on a huge pair of table tennis tables with Eldar Orks and Nids versing Squats, Marines and Guard. The idea would make tournaments more interesting. The idea probably does not lend itself to balanced armies though. You could have enough Guard to fill out a marine army, add in the necessary artillery and tanks, and then use the Marines as a drop assault army to cripple the enemy.

I know the replies will have emoticons like :nooo :{[] :tut and so on.

I can only dream. :spin

This also occurred to me as an interesting idea a while back and I've spent some time thinking over how it could work. I hadn’t posted up about it or tried it out yet but I’d like to. What I’d like to aim for is not just the possibility of allying armies, but doing so in a way that comes with some penalties and restrictions, so the added advantages of extra flexibility and combinations of units are hopefully balanced out and an allied list should be reasonably balanced vs a regular list. I’d like to put together a list of rules for doing so that could be used in friendly games and perhaps even an allied armies tournament.

*Points are split 50% between the two allied forces.
* Each allied force is selected separately using the standard restrictions e.g. with a 1,500 point IG force allied to a 1,500 point SM force each force may spend up to 500 points on titans and air separately (so a Reaver titan would not be allowed).
* Restrictions such as 0-1 of certain units apply to both allied armies together and not separately to each, i.e. the allied army as a whole may only have 0-1 supreme commander or 0-1 Avatar.
* An allied army uses the higher strategy rating of the two if there is a difference but the first activation their controlling player takes (and any retains immediately after that initial activation) MUST be made with formations from the higher strategy rating army.
* Allied forces may not use a supreme commander’s re-roll for their allies nor use the commander ability on them.
* Allied forces may never use each others’ transports.
* Allied forces may not use portable webway gates such as on Monoliths or Storm Serpents but they may use fixed webway portals if they are also allowed to in their own army e.g. an allied Dark Eldar formation could use an allied Eldar webway gate.

There’d be an allies chart for what armies could reasonably be allied based on the 40k one and their background e.g. Eldar could ally with Imperial armies, other Eldar (including Dark Eldar) or Tau. Tyranids could only ally with a Genestealer Cult.

Mintroll ran a doubles event a few years ago, it was more of a knockabout event than mega competetive, but enjoyed by all who attended, I think there may have been a rulespack written for it, will see if I can dig it out

Interesting to read. Did you go and how was it?

I prefer the idea of a tournament allowing a single player to take an allied force rather than a doubles tournament but each has pluses and minuses.

We have been playing this for years already.

2vs2 games, just rounding down SR, and re-rolls obviously for your own army.

It is up to any tournament Organiser to allow whatever they feel is ok.
If you want things like this then the simplest thing to do would be to organise a tournament with a list of things you want to allow.
Anything is possible if your running the event.
For games against a regular opponent just agree between yourselves.
