Have any of you tried GW's new contrast paint system yet? It seems like it gives good results and models can be painted to a decent tabletop standard in half the time or less and it might be quite suitable for Epic models?

From what I've read it has some similarity with the army painter quickshades, though acrylic and in a wide range of colours.

I'm eager to see the results first hand. Wondering if the bone colour ones would work for Eldar wraithbone.

I have not had a chance to use them yet, but just thinking about it, they should be really good or totally useless for 6mm scale stuff. No in between.

From what I've seen they are essentially paints for people who don't like painting, and they do the job very well. Slapdash if you ask me ;D

They can speed things up and are mostly being marketed at low end painting, but you can use them to do high quality models in less time too, if making use of the clear medium and more blending. Look at this guy Mengel Miniatures painted for example with virtually no highlighting - https://mobile.twitter.com/MengelMinis/ ... 7313387520

They seem to work good for organic shapes but look terrible on large flat surfaces on 40k tanks as the brush marks stay visible.

The new paints look pretty good on Epic infantry, but any mould lines are going to stand out like a sore thumb, like they would with a regular wash.

I think they’re really just another tool in the arsenal of painting (though nice in that they’re actually designed for miniature painting). The main limitation of one Contrast application versus conventional layering styles is that your wash will have the same colour as the base—but that’s what you’d expect from any wash or ink, isn’t it?

The real strength of GW’s offering seems to be in high-pigment basecoats coupled with improved (and pre-mixed) washes. Another option in the miniature painting world!

I can see the potential benefits, but I'm not sure I see how this is any faster than say, the army painter method.... you need a special primer and special paints, kinda like the army painter coloured primers and washes....

I fail to see how they offer much speed improvement when the basic method will be

Prime -> contrast basecoat -> paint in details

whereas currently if you are speed painting it tends to be

Prime -> paint on details -> wash (and some folks swap the wash and detail stage)

so you're not saving a stage of anything really, you're just applying your basecolour and wash together, whereas with the AP method you apply the primer and basecolour together

I hope it helps lead to more painted armies but I don't see it as the revelation folks are making it out to be.....

You actually don't need a special primer (said by GW and shown to be valid on numerous online videos). It works especially well with the primer as it's super super smooth.

From a FB group today (too big to image link)

https://scontent.fmia1-2.fna.fbcdn.net/ ... e=5D98BA9D

But yeah as Kyuss points out, this is just value painting where the highlight is the light base underneath. The Contrast paints however have INSANE pigment density which is nice. I'd probably use them as glazing tool myself.

I like this guy's youtube channel and he does a pretty neutral rundown of the contrast range, he's a solid painter, no Sam Lenz or Christoph Eichhorn, but he knows what he's doing ;)

Frankly seeing his results I'm somewhat unimpressed (although it did make me want to check out The Others board game... heh)

I also agree with what he says at the end

"it also seems like they're trying to sell to people that buy into the idea that you can paint better, with no time and skill invested if you own this specific product"

this is nothing new, every manufacturer of tools claims that if you use their new product it will make you better, but in reality, it just gives you a bigger collection of tools to use.... same with this, they'll have their uses for sure, and some people will be happier with the results they achieve, how much of that happniess is in their own heads is up for debate ;)

They also quietly released some new Base paints and other odds and ends. There's a 'Grey Knights' colour which I'm hoping is a good blue-ish steel colour.

Seeing this model by Eric Festa on facebook has really sold me on contrast :) It's just sprayed silver with just one coat of undiluted contrast paint over each of the areas. I might use this scheme for my Epic Ultramarines.
