September 1st is nearly here so let's talk EpiComp.

Are people happy with the categories?

  • Best Single Unit, WE and Battleforce (3 WEs or 3 sets of 3 units, in any combination)
  • Open (dioramas, objectives, terrain or other manufacturers)
  • DRM, EW, MWG, OM specific categories

What are your thoughts on fantasy 6mm in the comp?

Want to up the resolution to 1280x960?

Do we still need anonymous entry?

If not, do we still need simultaneous reveal?

please can we have proper battle forces again. 10 stands of lesser demons is not a battle force, however well painted each stand is … some entires were only 1 formation. Not sure what the solution is in terms of rules for minimum size, but it has become far too small imo.

People seemed to interpret 3 lots of 3 units as '9 or more stands is an acceptable battleforce'.

Battleforce should be battleforce, not formation.

Hi!

This.

A battle force is more than one formation. Perhaps some guidelines on what would constitute one would be helpful.

I also see no point in the anonymous entry.

Well, we could just rename it Best Formation. :P

Alternatively, create another category Best Formation and make Battleforce "X or more formations".

Before it was 4 sets of 4, which isn't any more battleforcey than what we have now.

maybe just say '3 distinct formations' as it wasn't clear.... or '3 formations based on those found in the various editions of epic'?

Not much more battleforcy, but depending on exactly how you count things around 7 of last years battleforce entires would not have met 4 sets of 4 requirement.

Epic is about having lossa minis. Battleforce should be the category that represents that. Best formation would be a more accurate name for some of last year's entires, but i'm not sure that's the point.

That'll just give Apoc a nervous tick when I enter three Deathstrike formations.

I'd rather go with a concrete number of models than base this on any rule set:

Best Formation (3 WEs or 3 sets of 3 units, in any combination)
Best Battleforce (3 formations as described above)

I'd agree concrete numbers are better due to different rule sets.

If there is a separate formation category then as small as 4 might be fine – if formations are not competing with whole battle forces they can be smaller than 3*3.

Battleforce as 3 of the (3 WE or 3*3) would make it very hard to have titan battle forces.

Minimum of 4 formations each containing a minimum of four units. Scout titans and SHT count as 2 units, larger war engines count as 4. (… aircraft are a pain then though)

4 stand of inf with their 4 APCs would not count as 2 formations, just one. Dunno how you judge or enforce that though across all the possible combinations.
scracth that i'm an idiot

I'd support the number of models approach too - basing on experience from years back when I organised Epicomp for a couple of years. Much easier for all.
Fantasy - if there are enough prizes - or even if not, anyway - definitely yes, fantasy too.
Resolution - if it adds something to the viewing quality, yes, but otherwise wouldn't bother as the pic quality is more important to creating a good impression on voters.
Categories - is the conversion competition still on? Or better still, conversion/scratchbuilding/sculpting, maybe?

I'd agree with the number of models approach. Perhaps it doesn't need to be too prescriptive just but offer a guide of minimum numbers to avoid restricting it just to ea formations? Something like min 12 infantry stands or LV, 8 AVs and a WE in formation sizes to suit the system?

Sounds like the best idea to me Dave!

No interest personally, but if enough others are then sure, why not.

Upping the resolution is a good idea for sure, but that still sounds pretty piddly. Can we not allow images a lot higher resolution than that? Displays on computers, tablets and phones are increasingly high definition, with 1920 x 1080 being common or even higher (e.g. I'm saving for laptop with a 4k 3840x2160 resolution) so why not make use of that? I suggest allowing 1920 x 1080 images. If anyone has less resolution on their display then their browser / image viewer will just scale the image to fit their screen anyway, though they'd have the option of zooming in on particular areas to see more detail if desired. Allowing images to either be 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio would be a good move too - nearly all displays are widesceen these days and I normally take photos in 16:9 on my camera too. 4:3 would be best for single models but 16:9 could help displaying a battleforce.

No, scrap anonymous entries.

Dave wrote:

Please can we go back to the older system of entering whereby entry photos can EITHER be posted in an entry thread OR emailed through? That was WAY better! Some will post up entries as they go and seeing others cool entries will keep interest and attention on the competition and inspire people to enter more. In the past few years with only revealing at the end there's been initial interest and I've meant to enter, but things have died down and I've forgotten all about Epicomp and not ended up entering. I'm convinced having entries being posted up as time passes will result in more entrants/entries as others are inspired and reminded. On the other hand I still want entries to be able to emailed through instead should people choose, to be revealed only at the end. This allows choice and is the best of both worlds, with still a full reveal of all entries happening at the end.

I assume the same restriction as previous years will apply to Epicomp, whereby certain (sadly long OOP) models too close to others IP aren't allowed to entered? (though one off creations for personal use are fine as are models that take some inspiration but do their own slant on things, e.g. Troublemaker or Onslaught) I understand the reasons for excluding them and think it is good and sensible and it should be continued.

On the other hand I have a controversial suggestion however: could we maybe also run a 'Shadow Epicomp' category? It would have to be entry limited to longer standing trusted forum posters only, unofficial and NOT to be shared or mentioned elsewhere. Entry photos could be emailed through and a zipped file of images emailed around to just those entering to vote on. Probably best to keep it simple and let people enter a photo of anything from a single model to a battleforce.

I have a few hundred epic models with me (with the rest in storage the other side of the planet) but 95+% of them are models I wouldn't be allowed to enter in Epicomp, which is a shame. I'm likely an extreme case but I would think others could be interested to enter such a category too? Would it be a good idea or bad idea?
