So... what does someone do when he is waiting on art for the Art of Command and Distant Sun?

His mind spins and he comes up with another project:

Pirates of the Khareshi Expanse

And a slumbering one it is. Some years ago, here on TacCom, a wildbunch started to design some rules and ships for small xenos races within the 40k/BFG universe.

Now I am planning to do a supplement where I collect various homebrewn xenos races into a single supplement.

So what can you do about it?
Post your xenos race! A small (or large) piece of background, a vessel (or two) and its stats.  Detail their culture, behaviour if you can.

Limitations: I don't expect fleets. I don't expect planet killers. I expect small ships, escort vessels. Not 10 types of one race but one or two. Each race should have some unique special rules.

Cool?

As an example of a pirate race from the Khareshi Expanse I can point you to the Tobari Raiders in Warp Rift 11.

I have always been intrigued by the idea of a race that likes to fire flak rounds (represented by blast markers). Anything already made with this idea? I imagine they would be a headache of an opponet to face. Maybe even have special rules for thier blast markers.

Yes, these exist. I'll dig out the paticular race.

Awesome! I have read some rules somewhere of rolling a scatter dice and distance to put out random blast markers but I was thinking something more direct fire.

Also, I have fished up some old Star Wars Micro Machines figures and have started converting them for my Rouge Trader fleet for use as convoy escort light cruisers. Unfortunately I didnt have the time to finish them for Gothicomp this year. Maybe next year!!

Here is one race from the Khareshi Expanse:

Vegians

The Vegians are a merchant culture native to the wilderness territories of the Ultima Segmentem. Humanoid in appearance, Vegians are distinguished by pale skin, small stature, completely black eyes, and hair worn in waist length braids for cultural reasons.
Vegian ships are light vessels built mainly for trade and stellar mapping.  Their only weapons are defensive flak cannons, originally created to destroy flocks of interstellar reptiles that plagued Vegian space stations in their early days of space travel.

VEGIAN FLAK CRUISER (CL) ….75 pts

Hits: 4
Speed: 20cm
Turns: 45º
Shields: 1
Armour: 5+
Turrets: 4

Dorsal Flak Cannon --- 30cm --- str.4 --- LFR

Special Rules

* Flak Cannon

For each point of strength, place a blast marker in the weapon’ range and arc.  If a blast marker is placed on an ordnance counter or wave, the counter or wave is destroyed on a D6 roll of 4+.  If a blast marker is placed against a ship with active shields, roll a D6.  On a 4+, the blast marker remains, on other results the target ship's controller may move that marker up to 1 cm away from the ship.  If one of these blast marker is placed in contact with a ship whose shields are knocked down or that has no shields, the ship takes a point of damage on a D6 roll of 6.

Tobari Raiders

TOBARI LIGHT RAIDER (DD)___40 pts

Hits: 1
Speed: 35cm
Turns: 90º
Shields: 2
Armour: 5+
Turrets: 1

Prow disruptor --- 15cm --- str.1 --- F
Dorsal weapons battery --- 30cm --- str.1 --- F

TOBARI HEAVY RAIDER (FF)……55 pts

Hits: 1
Speed: 25cm
Turns: 90º
Shields: 2
Armour: 6+
Turrets: 1

Prow disruptor --- 15cm --- str.1 --- F
Dorsal weapons battery --- 30cm --- str.3 --- LFR

Special rules

* Disruptor weapon
This short ranged but advanced weapon does not bring direct damage to the ship being hit but cuts through to the core electrical functions and disables those.

The Disruptor negates shields and hits on a 5+. Apply the following results:

+ 5 inflicts a critical hit;
+ 6  inflicts a critical hit and places a BM on the ship being targeted.

Note: Critical hits are being rolled using the standard critical hit charts.

* Advanced teleport attack
The Tobari have a teleport technology more advanced as previously has been found. They found a way to teleport onto another ship without the ship having its shields down.
When the Tobari get within a 10cm range they can make 1 teleport raid against any enemy ship in range. The Tobari will not inflict damage on the ship but instead loot as much of worth as they can find before teleporting back to their own ship.

Per teleport attack roll a D6, if the result is higher as the enemy vessel has remaining shields the raid is successful.

Roll another D6 to see what the result is from the Teleport Raid,.

Multiply result with 5 against escorts, thus the result of D6x5 is the number of victory points you gain.
Multiply result with 10 against escorts, thus the result of D6x10 is the number of victory points you gain.

Note: Normal boarding modifiers apply, example, Space Marines give a negative modifier when being boarded. In case of Space Marines cruiser the result would be (D6-1)x10.

Dakeshi

The Dakeshi are an enigmatic race native to the Palladias nebula in the Ultima Segmentum.  Little is known of their race by outsiders, as every expedition into the nebula has vanished with out a trace. What is known comes through second-hand accounts of contact with Dakeshi “missaries” small squadrons of Dakeshi ships sent to explore space outside of their nebular home.  It is believed these Emissaries are searching for portents that fulfill their religious prophecies, but what exactly these portents are or what happens when the prophecy is fulfilled remains a mystery.
To date, the only Dakeshi vessels contacted have been small, escort-scale craft dubbed Swarmships, a reference to the squadrons of small craft each carries.  Though each ship mounts none of its own weapons, the fighters, known as Swarmers, are agile craft that mount weaponry capable of damaging even capital ships.
It is postulated that larger Dakeshi vessels exist, but if they do, no one who has seen them has lived to report it.

DAKESHI SWARMSHIP (DD)___0 pts

Hits: 1
Speed: 15cm
Turns: 45º
Shields: 1
Armour: 5+
Turrets: 1
ARMAMENT ARMAMENT RANGE/SPEED RANGE/SPEED FIREPOWER/STR FIREPOWER/STR FIRE ARC FIRE ARC
Launch Bay --- 45cm --- str.1 --- NA

Special rules

* Ordnance

Swarmers are treated as interceptors with speed 45 cm.  Additionally, swarmers may attack capital ships as bombers, but they always only one attack and this attack is not reduced by the target’ turrets.

* Nebular Race

The Dakeshi are native to nebular gas clouds, and their ships are specifically designed to operate within them.  Dakeshi Swarmships and Swarmers suffer no penalties or damage for moving through gas/dust clouds.

If I may ask, what are the fleet restrictions for these? And are they only intended for Raids and the Surprise Attack scenarios? And are these allies or enemies?

Ah, I was working on a supplement but time got short/little. So no advance.

But I was so kind to post everything at Port Maw.

Alas, Pirates of the Khareshi Expanse is a specific supplement focussing on small actions. Eg only escorts, or 1 cruiser plus some escorts.

It has fleet lists for the Xenos and Imperial Pirate Hunters and Tau Border Patrol.

Plus a couple (?) of special rules making the little action more 'cool'. Three new special orders, escort crit hit table. Things thus 'stolen/borrowed' from the old Privateer PDF (Matt Keefe) and the new Rogue Trader RPG book.

I'll keep posting.... ;)

Khareshi Background

The Khareshi Expanse.

What is the Khareshi Expanse? To the Imperial administratum nothing more as a forgotten and non important Nebula in the Eastern Fringe. But for what do they know? The Khareshi Expanse is alive!

Many old, dated and non-verified reports exist on the Expanse, yet none of them seem to be fulfilling. The few recent reports that are transmitted are filed away in back end archives; if they even make it that far.

But what do these reports tell? The scouring eye will see the raids on Merchants, the attacks on traders and unlucky passing ships of any kind. Those ships who dare to enter the Expanse are never to be seen. Oh, a great many bold Rogue Traders have taken on that journey on their never ending quest of wealth and more.

The more observant explorers or the two reports scavenged reports from the Adeptus Mechanicus tell us of xenos vessel leaving and upon return entering the Expanse. From this we know that there is existence within this Nebula. This one and sole entrance guarded by the mysterious Caredlio Portal. A design of ancient with unknown purpose. A structure which can not be entered. For what it is we do not know. For what it looks like is a guardian to the gate.

This Nebula, this enigma, is cluttered by a large variety of xenos species. Different designs of vessels sally forth into the space of Mankind. Always preying upon the weak. Never we have taken such a xenos vessel. With unknown technologies they steal our riches and our people! Yet, somehow, this is filed under piracy as any other raid. A threat to small to take care of.

In a space, called Beralan, to unimportant to waste resources on. With the alien Tau and their adversaries driving into our Imperium, the Tyranids eating our planets and the gathering of Orks the choice is to be understood.

For what I prepare is not a great many resources but a watchful eye upon the Expanse. For what the revered Lord Inquisitor Revic has told at his Testimony to the Forum of Ansamas and upon review of my own journey into the Khareshi Expanse this is a necessary step.

The Expanse is alive and it breathes into our realm.

Inquisitor Horatio Luvern

--------
For what I have told before is not entirly true. There are men who have travelled the Expanse and returned. With stories so unbelievable a great many Inquisitor would burn them for Heresy. But, alas, it is me who has followed the steps by the revenant Lord Inquisitor Revic, who travelled the Expanse and returned to tell his tale, and took upon a journey into this enigma.

Guided by a blessed vessel, the Angelic its name, I have seen the purpose of the Expanse. I have witnessed its wonders. I have endured its mental tests. I have seen its horrors. I have seen the truth! It is through the determination of Artelus Grey I made my way back. He, who gave his very soul to keep the Expanse in its current state, has chosen a path to silence the flux in the Expanse.

The Khareshi Expanse stayed silent for many decades. The raids diminished and the xenos almost dissapeared. Some even started to forget. But now as we speak xenos are raving our shipping lanes again.

raceswith races, almost all of them capable of warp travel or FTL. It has been reported that some of these races are staring to leave their Nebula more often in the last decennia. Imperial merchant vessels have been more and more a target of them. But since priority lies not in the Khareshi Nebula no thorough investigation has been set up, only some foolhardy rogue traders travel their in the hope to find profit.

But we still have the escorts at one hit each.... It would be interesting to see how you've been able to get around that.

It sounds like you took some ideas from the Cerberus Shroud setup for this one. Definately looking forward to seeing what you have made of it so far! Are you making a campaign storyline similair to Distant Darkness or are you doing this one differently?

Very differently.

Only background setting (with story, but less detailed then Darkness), then xenos races, fleet lists, special phenomena (and space zones), ehm... what's more? Scenarios.

Bit like rulebook, you roll a d6 for scenarios upon raid table but some raids are new scenarios etc.
